The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has awarded Contract 6 of the I-81 Viaduct Project to CNY Alliance, a joint venture of three New York-based heavy civil contractors. As members of the CNY Alliance team, Stantec and KC Engineering will provide design services for the multibillion-dollar modernization of the I-81 corridor in Syracuse. Contract 6 is the largest and most complex design-build contract within the multi-year initiative.
The broader program will improve highway infrastructure along a 12-mile corridor, enhance drainage, and reduce congestion. Contract 6 includes removal of the existing viaduct, reconstruction of major highway infrastructure, modernization of the I-81/I-690 interchange, construction of 25 new bridges, and replacement of the 1.4-mile elevated viaduct with a community grid that reconnects city streets through downtown Syracuse.
Stantec will support highway and bridge design for portions of the corridor, contributing to improvements in traffic flow and long-term system performance.

Stantec completed the original planning study for the program and later partnered with KC Engineering and CNY Alliance on Contract 2. Once complete, the program will improve mobility, strengthen regional connectivity, and support long-term economic growth and community revitalization.
