F.G. Gardiner Expressway Section 2 Rehabilitation Project wins Infrastructure Achievement Award

The F.G. Gardiner Expressway Section 2 Rehabilitation Project has been recognized with an Infrastructure Achievement Award from the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC).
Stantec is the lead designer and engineer of record for the project. Rehabilitation of the 700-metre elevated structure in downtown Toronto was completed while four traffic lanes remained open above streetcars, rail operations, Exhibition Place, and complex construction activity. This section of the Gardiner is one of the busiest corridors in Canada, carrying more than 150,000 vehicles daily.
“This is a fantastic distinction, and a culmination of extensive work on the Gardiner Expressway for the City of Toronto since 1979,” said Gregg Cooke, vice president of Transportation at Stantec. “We are currently working closely with the City on other sections of upgrades to the expressway, supporting its multiyear Strategic Rehabilitation Plan.”
The project was the City of Toronto’s first to be delivered using a design-build model. The model provides faster delivery, collaborative design, and innovative construction solutions.
Through careful staging and concurrent construction activities, the project achieved a design life of 75 years and reopened to six lanes in October 2025, 18 months ahead of schedule.
In addition to the City of Toronto, project partners Grascan Construction Ltd, Torbridge Construction Ltd, Stantec, Doug Dixon and Associates, the Province of Ontario, and Parsons were included in the award.
