Stantec selected for design of multi-purpose port in Kiribati

10/19/2020 BRUSSELS, BELIGUM TSX,NYSE:STN

The government of Kiribati, with financial support from the European Union, is investing in the development of a multi-purpose port on Kiritimati Island with a goal of transforming this small island nation into one of the main transhipment hubs in the Pacific. Nestled in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, Kiribati has shown great potential for significant socio-economic development, thanks to its strategic location and flourishing eco-tourism and fishing industries.

To help actualize this multi-purpose port, Stantec was awarded a contract for the preparation of the project’s conceptual design. The assignment will require field studies, including social and environmental impact assessments, wave data collection and analysis, cadastral surveys, and topographical investigations. The implementation of the project will last six months.

In consideration of the potential impacts of climate change on the island, the design of the port will incorporate climate-resilient infrastructure. To this end, modelling exercises and the deployment of specific software will help the Stantec team identify the potential impacts of climate change on the proposed structures and devise mitigation measures.

The implementation of the project will be led by a global team of Stantec experts, including members from Stantec’s Ports and Marine Terminal team in Canada, with Harold Westerman (Vancouver, BC) serving as Team Leader and Nigel Denby (Burnaby, BC) as geotechnical design engineer. The team will work in close concert with technical experts from Kiribati for the facilitation of field surveys and the involvement of various stakeholders throughout the project.

“Our team is excited to support this client by collaborating with local experts, while also calling on the expertise that is afforded to us from being part of such a large global organization,” said Christophe Leroy, Stantec Belgium Operations Director. “Our extensive knowledge of international contexts, paired with the technical expertise of our global team, will help the Republic of Kiribati bring their port to life and support goals for increased economic growth for eco-tourism and fisheries.”
