City of Buckeye announces naming of new water treatment campus

Stantec-designed facility to increase water capacity to accommodate projected city growth

11/20/2020 PHOENIX, AZ TSX,NYSE:STN

The City of Buckeye recently announced the naming of its new water treatment campus as the Jackie A. Meck Water Campus at a private ceremony last week in honor of the City’s mayor and lifelong resident who is retiring. The City chose to design and develop the facility, formerly known as the Broadway Road Water Campus (BRWC), to address increasing water capacity for future population growth and improving water quality.

As the lead designer on the Kiewit-Haydon Joint Venture, global engineering and design firm Stantec helped concurrently plan the water supply and treatment systems for the BRWC project and design emergency replacement project elements. As of the naming ceremony, 3 wells and a 4-million-gallon freshwater reservoir are operational, replacing failing infrastructure. Planning elements include a hydrogeologic model to identify the best locations for quality and quantity of the wells, and a service area master plan informing size collection and finished waterlines, pump station sizing, and treatment needs for near- and long-term expansion. The team also completed a pilot study comparing reverse osmosis treatment technologies to reduce brine.

Additionally, design is complete and construction is progressing for a 6 million-gallon per day (MGD) arsenic treatment phase with future expansion to 8 MGD, a finished water pump station feeding two pressure zones, and 8.5 miles of waterlines. Under a fast-tracked, progressive design-build delivery method, this critical infrastructure project will provide reliable and safe water to residents for years to come.

“The Jackie A. Meck Water Campus is the most significant capital project underway in the city,” said Maria Brady, Stantec’s design manager based in Phoenix. “Upon completion, the project will upgrade the City’s water infrastructure, add to its water portfolio, and improve water quality for residents. It’s exciting to celebrate the naming of the new water campus, and we are thrilled to help deliver this critical project.”

Having surpassed 50% completion in May 2020, the Jackie A. Meck Water Campus will at final completion include new wells, transmission and distribution lines, storage tanks, treatment facilities, and booster pumps to service the local area. Remaining construction is expected to be complete in 2022, and an official naming ceremony is expected to take place in 2021.
