Stantec celebrates opening of two new CAMH buildings

Design for transformative mental health project aids in community integration

TORONTO, ON, NYSE:STN

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) celebrated the opening of two new buildings today: the eight-storey McCain Complex Care & Recovery Building and the seven-storey Crisis & Critical Care Building. The opening of the two buildings in Toronto’s Queen Street West neighborhood marks the completion of the third phase of CAMH’s redevelopment project.

Global design firm Stantec – as part of the Plenary Health team with design-builder PCL Constructors Canada Inc. – provided architecture, interior design, landscape design, civil and structural engineering, as well as operational readiness for the project.

The new buildings include 235 patient beds total and co-locate education and clinical programs to create collaborative opportunities for knowledge exchange, discovery, and learning. This phase of CAMH’s redevelopment adds approximately 650,000 square feet of new space. CAMH’s new inpatient rooms are infused with natural light and provide a safe space for patients to heal. The new buildings feature common areas that reduce stress through art and nature. Community integration is encouraged through street-level retail and green space improvements.

“We’re happy to see CAMH’s two new buildings open so that patients can start receiving expert care in these modern, welcoming healthcare spaces,” says Ronald Mar, Stantec principal and architecture lead on the project. “In the midst of the current mental health crisis in our society, we’re proud to be part of the solution that connects people struggling with mental health with a safe place for care and education. Our design for Phase 1C reflects the CAMH vision for community integration and normalizing of mental health care across all ages and cultures.”

Stantec has worked with CAMH since 2008, first on phase 1B – which opened in 2012 – and now on Phase 1C of its long-term redevelopment project. For Phase 1C, KPMB and Montgomery Sisam Architects served as the Planning, Design, and Compliance (PDC) consultants.

“The opening of our two state-of-the art buildings for patient care is the culmination of years of dedication in the service of transforming care for people with mental illness,” says Dr. Catherine Zahn, president and CEO, CAMH. “I want to extend my most sincere appreciation to Stantec, and all of our redevelopment project partners, who worked with CAMH to design and build these world-class facilities. Your expertise and skill have brought a worthy vision to life.”

The completion of Phase 1C of CAMH’s Redevelopment Project marks the fourth major Stantec-designed hospital project to be delivered in Ontario this year. Together, they add an additional 730 new beds and more than 2.3 million square feet of clinical space within the province. Other projects include Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Brockville General Hospital’s Phase II Redevelopment Project, and the new Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. With the completion of CAMH’s Phase 1C, Stantec continues to advance its vision of enhancing health worldwide through the power of design while increasing access to critical health services for everyone in the province.
