Tampa Bay Lightning and Stantec to host Idea Hackathon addressing the future of mobility in Tampa

The Tampa Bay Lightning are partnering with global design firm Stantec to host Tampa’s first Idea Hackathon designed to engage new technologies in building a better mobility future for the city. The event will be held on March 9 and 10 at AMALIE Arena with 100 students, academics, professionals, and citizens from the Tampa Bay Area.

Teams will come together to brainstorm their best ideas to address the Idea Hackathon’s challenge statement: How do we leverage technology to define and design a new mobility future that ensures Tampa is a livable, equitable and resilient city?

The top five teams will present their ideas to a “Shark-Tank” style panel of judges, and the winning teams will be awarded prizes valued at a combined $5,000.

“New technologies like e-bikes and self-driving vehicles have the power to change the way we move through our communities,” said Frank Domingo, Mobility Solutions Team Lead at Stantec. “We’re at a critical point right now in understanding how to harness them to improve our quality of life. As we plan for the future of our community, the best place to look for great ideas is within the community itself.”

The event will kick off at 11:30 a.m. on March 9 and will feature speakers and judges from the smart city, technology, policy and research, and construction industries. Mentors with expertise in smart cities, mobility, and community development will help guide teams to build the best ideas they can.

This will be the second Idea Hackathon that Stantec has hosted, the first of which was held in Toronto at the headquarters of The Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper. An Idea Book published after the event compiled each team’s ideas on how to make Toronto more livable, equitable, and resilient.
