Stantec awarded high impact Global Energy Transition project by the European Commission

Stantec’s International Development team selected to lead the Foreign Policy Instrument Service’s “EU leading the Global Energy Transition” initiative

10/12/2021 LA HULPE, BELGIUM

The Stantec International Development team in Belgium was selected by the European Commission Foreign Policy Instrument (FPI) Service to provide technical assistance on the “EU leading the Global Energy Transition” project, a global initiative aimed at furthering action on the European Green Deal and making strides towards Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7), the ambition to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

The project focuses on the promotion of the European Union (EU) and its Member States' approach, technical knowledge, rules, and experience in the energy transition in specific partner countries, with a goal of fostering business opportunities in sustainable energy technologies. To accomplish this, Stantec will focus efforts around three primary tasks. The first concerns the establishment of a repository of training modules on relevant EU energy policy and practices for DG ENER, the European Commission department responsible for the EU's energy policy, focused on providing secure, sustainable, and competitively priced energy in Europe. Second, the team will organize outreach actions to promote EU capabilities and knowledge-sharing across targeted countries through a series of study tours, workshops, and high-level events. Lastly, they will lead communication, promotion, and outreach activities in line with the program’s Communications and Visibility plan.

The impact of this initiative is meant to transcend borders, with identified regions of focus including Southeast Asia, Central and South Asia, and Latin America. The Stantec team, with project experience in each of these regions, will leverage its experience and partnerships with local communities to help the EU achieve its goal of becoming the global leader in the energy transition. To maximize efforts, outreach activities will be targeted at national authorities and energy related agencies, where responsibility around climate action currently lies, with a secondary focus to involve influencers such as business organizations and energy related business associations, academia, think tanks and civil society.

This large-scale project has kicked off, with a total budget of nearly 3 million EUR.

“I am thrilled that our team has been selected to support this project, one of the most ambitious and emblematic technical assistance contracts from FPI, to support European Union leadership in their global energy transition ambition,” states Christophe Leroy, Operations Director for Stantec in Belgium. “This project has the potential to strengthen the EU's energy diplomacy capacity, particularly towards the targeted group of 20+ countries identified as priority areas. We look forward to this opportunity to collaborate with the European Commission and our consortium partners to help bring about positive progress.”

“This project is especially notable for FPI’s integrated approach,” adds Stantec Communications & Visibility Director Virginie Louis. “Not only will Stantec be supplying our climate and energy expertise, but we will also offer communications and stakeholder services to make the public more aware of the great effort being put forth to make their communities more climate resilient, while also involving them in that process.”
