Construction underway at the Stantec-designed Chimney Hollow Reservoir

Major water storage project in Northern Colorado will supply supplementary water for more than 825,000 residents

01/21/2022 DENVER, CO TSX,NYSE:STN

Global design firm Stantec and Municipal Subdistrict Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District (Northern Water) are celebrating the groundbreaking of the Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project. The $485-million project is now under construction following a 20-plus year planning and permitting effort to add resilience to the water supply.

Stantec provided the detailed design which includes a 355-foot-tall dam, spillway, saddle dam, and outlet works, and will provide engineering services during the approximately four years of construction. Located west of Loveland, Colorado, the Chimney Hollow Reservoir dam will be the largest dam built in Colorado in 50 years and will provide much-needed water storage to meet the needs of growing populations across Northern Colorado communities, including Broomfield, Longmont, Loveland, and Greeley.

Once completed, the Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project will:

  • Provide storage for 90,000 acre-feet of water
  • Offer environmental benefits to Colorado's rivers and streams through various environmental commitments such as the construction of the Colorado River Connectivity Channel
  • Enhance recreation opportunities jointly with Larimer County to encourage healthy, outdoor lifestyles for residents
  • Help meet an increased demand for water in Northern Colorado communities

“With many of our employees based in northern Colorado, we are committed to long-term planning for future water needs that make an impact in our own backyard,” stated Mario Finis, Stantec’s Energy and Resources Business Leader. “Our team of experts worked hard to deliver high-quality design services to support the Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project and accommodate the increasing population along the Front Range.”

The project is expected to be completed by 2025.
