Arden Precinct is paving the way for sustainability

A first for Victoria—a new parking policy making way for change

VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

Stantec is turning parking policy on its head. Arden, the largest urban renewal precinct in the inner north of Melbourne, will have zero reserved parking and all single-use private car parks will be subject to a permit application. This strategy elegantly solves the problem of less parking spots through the planning scheme, while increasing shared space opportunities.

Arden, less than two kilometres from the heart of Melbourne, presents a once in a generation opportunity to grow a genuinely sustainable community. The precinct is centred around Arden Station, a new station on the Melbourne Metro Tunnel rail line, and will leverage this investment to the full, with car use planned to be just 10% of all journeys—freeing up prime space for alternative modes of transport.

'The wider aim of this precinct is to create urban places that are vibrant, safe and sustainable,’ says Neale McCracken, Project Manager. ‘This parking policy helps us achieve these objectives by freeing up more space, which will be used for walkways and cycle paths, delivering more sustainable cities.’

The parking policy implementation strategy has been upheld by Planning Panels Victoria, and Stantec’s precinct parking plan has been welcomed at local and state government level. The car parking policy will be supported by incorporating the precinct parking plan within the Melbourne Planning Scheme.
