Stantec plans new unified office in downtown Boston

Leading global design and engineering firm to combine its two Boston locations at 40 Water Street for enhanced workplace collaboration and flexibility

04/13/2022 BOSTON, MA TSX, NYSE: STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, announced that it will merge its two Boston locations into one unified space at 40 Water Street in Downtown Boston. The move, anticipated for Summer 2022, will unite nearly 250 employees—including architects, interior designers, engineers, urban planners, landscape architects, project managers, and graphic designers—in a modern space designed for optimal team collaboration, flexibility, and innovation.

The approximately 25,000 sq. ft. space is located just steps from Post Office Square. Housing a materials library and workspace, a model shop, a virtual reality (VR) studio, and numerous areas for collaboration, the new space allows Stantec to further its commitment to design excellence.

“There is a rich pool of multidisciplinary creativity at Stantec. Bringing our practitioners more closely together will allow us to tap into that synergy to deliver even more complex, forward-thinking projects for our clients and our community,” said James Gray, Senior Principal at Stantec.

The Boston move, which will unite existing locations at 311 Summer Street and 226 Causeway Street, also reflects Stantec’s post-COVID Flexible Workplace Strategy. The firm expects that a portion of practitioners will work in the office full-time, with a larger percentage working a hybrid schedule—allowing more space to be dedicated to creative and collaborative workflows. Additionally, the move supports Stantec’s global commitment to improving sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.

“Charting new frontiers in hybrid collaboration is at the top of our minds, which is why we are integrating many resources to understand the future of work and collaboration not only for ourselves, but our clients as well,” said Colleen Arria, Principal and Workplace Design Leader at Stantec.

Stantec brings decades of experience supporting a range of markets in the Greater Boston area. Across the region, the multidisciplinary team plans, designs, and engineers public infrastructure, landscapes, urban spaces, buildings, and interiors for a range of community needs and experiences. Recently completed and ongoing projects include The BEAT, the Northland Newton Development, Nubian Square Ascends, the Boston Marathon Memorial, and the Poplar Street Pump Station Project.
