Stantec selected for design and engineering of Bear Creek Athletics Centre

Facility will provide community with world-class athletic spaces

11/24/2022 EDMONTON, AB; SURREY, BC TSX,NYSE:STN

Global integrated design firm Stantec has been selected by the City of Surrey to provide architecture and engineering services for a new athletic and community facility at Bear Creek Park. The $26.5 million project will provide the City’s 580,000 residents with a world-class athletic centre that will blend sport, recreation and community events in a facility that is integrated into the natural setting of the park.

The project is a collaboration between Stantec’s Vancouver team, who is leading architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering, signage and wayfinding, and sustainability services, with JSA Sports as sports design consultants; Fast+Epp, responsible for the structural design of the structure and optimizing the use of wood throughout the building; and PFS Studio responsible for landscape architecture; and Ecora, responsible for civil engineering.

“Bear Creek is a major part of Surrey’s story and it’s been an incredible opportunity to be involved in a project where we can realize a true community practice”, says Doug Hamming, senior principal Buildings, and the project’s lead architects. “The Athletics Centre is a place that encourages interaction, new connections, and new first experiences.”

The centre will position Surrey as a regional destination for high-level soccer and football high-level practices and games in addition to a full range of track and field sports. The project also provides the local community with an accessible state-of-the-art sport facility for exercise plus a new venue to host cultural events. The new facility will include a partially covered grandstand with seating for 2,200 spectators. The design features permeable access with multiple wide entrance ways to offer views onto the track and field and to allow athletes to easily access the change-rooms and the balance of the park.

The building has been integrated into the physical and spatial layout of the existing amenities of the park. The hard and soft landscape around the Grandstand is knit into the existing landscape by an edge ribbon which formally and materially morphs along its path in response to adjacent plantings. In response to its natural setting in the park, the building employs materials in their most elemental form including wood, to reflect the natural ecological setting of the park, and its sustainable and biophilic properties.

The Bear Creek Athletics Centre approved in the 2021 Five-Year (2021-2025) Capital Financial Plan and is among more than 20 projects included in the ‘Surrey Invests’ Capital Plan.  Construction on the Bear Creek Athletics Center has begun and it is expected be complete by the end of 2023.

Stantec is ranked as a top ten design firm by Engineering News Record, Architectural Record, and Building Design + Construction.
