Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been selected as Owner’s Engineer (OE) for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for the Cariboo Road Recovery Projects in British Columbia. The region has experienced unprecedented snow melt, wildfires, and road washouts, creating an imminent need for rehabilitation and resilience measures.

For more than 3 years, the Cariboo community has been impacted by the changing road conditions, which have resulted in an significant travel disruptions for the community and restricted the supply chain in the region.

“We are so proud to be a part of such a critical infrastructure project that will serve so many communities in the Cariboo region,” said Sarv Jahankhani senior principal and western Canada regional business leader, Transportation. “The opportunity to repair the damaged roads and set the region up for years of stability with resilience planning is one we don’t take lightly. This is a critical area for British Columbia’s trade network and completing these 10 projects will make a significant difference to those in and around the Cariboo area.”

The Stantec OE team and sub-consultants will undertake the program and project management services to advise, assist, and support the Ministry’s Program Team. The firm will also coordinate and manage a multidisciplinary team of engineering and technical specialists and provide support for the management, design, procurement, construction, and implementation of the 10 projects. Stantec will also focus on measures that promote resilience in the area, future proofing these critical transportation networks.

The Cariboo Road Recovery Projects will address the transportation impact on 10 major locations such as Highway 97 at Cottonwood Hill and Blackwater Road at Knickerbocker. Stantec will provide engineering oversight, project management, project controls, risk analysis, environmental/climate services, geotechnical services, quality management, and Indigenous engagement support related to the projects.

Stantec’s transportation group has long provided emergency response and resilient solutions to changing conditions and natural disasters across North America. Recently, the team supported the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in responding to devastating flash floods in Eastern Kentucky, where more than 100 bridges were washed out.
