Stantec named to Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index for fourth consecutive year

Firm recognized with consistent increase for championing inclusion

01/31/2023 EDMONTON, AB TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been named to Bloomberg’s 2023 Gender-Equality Index (GEI), which tracks the performance of public companies committed to gender-data reporting transparency and advancing women’s equality in the workplace. This is the fourth consecutive year that Stantec has been recognized by the GEI for the Company’s commitment to gender equality in the workplace. Bloomberg released the 2023 index, which features 485 companies spanning 45 countries in 11 different business sectors, on January 31.

“Our recognition from Bloomberg’s GEI score is a result of our intentional focus on creating an inspired, inclusive, and equitable culture,” said Asifa Samji, Stantec’s chief people and inclusion officer. “This momentum and continued prioritization on improving this area of our organization is only possible because of our dedicated employees who champion important conversations around topics like pay equity, parental leave, and strengthening our culture.”

Making meaningful progress
The 2023 GEI recognized Stantec’s notable inclusion, diversity, and equity achievements, resulting in a 7% increase in its score relative to the prior year. The firm has seen a 19% improvement since first being accepted into the index. Stantec’s progress was noted in the following areas:

  • Steadily increasing the percentage of women hires and promotions
  • Expanding the Company’s pay equity review and steadily decreasing the gender pay gap
  • Committing to global frameworks that promote gender equality (such as the UN’s Women’s Empowerment Principles)
  • Formalizing the Company’s flexible workplace strategy
  • Demonstrating a deeper commitment to inclusion by renaming the Company’s chief human resources officer role to chief people and inclusion officer

Companies included in the 2023 GEI have all publicly released their gender-related data using Bloomberg’s reporting framework. The framework captures data across five key areas: female leadership and talent pipeline, equal pay and gender pay parity, inclusive culture, anti-sexual harassment policies, and external brand. In 2023, 12,000 companies were evaluated, and firms that score above a globally established threshold are named to the GEI with results published on the Bloomberg Terminal.

Advancing equality
Stantec’s placement on the GEI follows a series of relevant company initiatives, activities, and reports on the organization’s culture and workforce:

  • Stantec amended and extended its syndicated senior credit facility under a Sustainability-Linked Loan, becoming the first company globally to link its financing strategy to its Bloomberg GEI score.
  • Approximately 35 percent of Stantec employees are female. More than half of Stantec’s entry-level staff is female. Within the leadership structure for the organization, 43 percent of Stantec’s current board members are female and 43 percent of the C-Suite positions are held by female leaders, including two C-Suite women of color.
  • There are 36 Stantec locations that run Women@Stantec employee resource groups, which are company-sponsored grassroots teams created to promote gender equality and career development.
  • Stantec has committed to global frameworks that promote gender equality, including the company formally endorsing the Women’s Empowerment Principles—a project of the United Nations Global Compact—and active involvement in the Global Compact Network Canada’s Target Gender Equality Ambition Accelerator.
