Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, and joint venture partner Revery Architecture have been selected to provide architectural design and engineering services for the first phase of Centre Block, a transformative mixed-use development in downtown Surrey, British Columbia.
Spearheaded by the City of Surrey in partnership with Simon Fraser University (SFU), the project will play a key role in the City’s ongoing urbanization efforts in the downtown core by providing a permanent home for Western Canada’s first new medical school in almost 60 years, as well as a new childcare facility and three levels of office space.
Located on a prominent 3.5-acre site immediately adjacent to Surrey’s primary rapid transit node, Surrey Central Station, and SFU’s Surrey campus locations, Centre Block Phase One will deliver a 12-storey mixed-use building offering a total of 550,000 square feet.
Offering education and workspaces
The 11,000-square-foot ground level will be shared between the City of Surrey and SFU and include a joint lobby, city-owned retail space, and SFU community space. The next seven levels will be occupied by the SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine, which will include classrooms, research labs, administrative offices, and a public-facing family clinic where students can gain real-world experience offering medical services to the Surrey community. Level 8 houses an SFU childcare facility with 48-50 seats for faculty, staff, students and the local community, and levels 9 to 11, and part of level 12 will offer 89,000 square feet of leasable office space.
The joint venture was awarded the contract for the Phase One project in October, which details a scope of architecture, electrical, lighting, information and communications technology, sustainability, acoustics, and building envelope design. The project also includes subsequent contracts with SFU and the City of Surrey for the interior fit out of their respective spaces within the building.
“Centre Block reflects a bold vision for the future of Surrey’s downtown—one that will come to life over the next decade through a dynamic, two-million-square-foot urban redevelopment,” said Darren Burns, vice president of design at Stantec. “With Phase One, the City of Surrey and SFU are taking another step towards creating a vibrant, walkable, and connected city centre.”
SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine students will move to Centre Block, from their current location at SFU’s Central City campus, upon completion of the project in August of 2030.
