Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, contributed to the delivery of the Edith Cowan University (ECU) City campus, which opened in Perth’s central business district this year. The A$853 million ECU City campus brings education, research, and performance facilities into the heart of the city, boosting both cultural life and economic activity.
The first comprehensive university campus to be situated within the Perth central business district is expected to bring about 10,000 students and staff, creating stronger links between education, industry, and the surrounding cultural precincts. The campus was delivered as a collaboration between the Australian Government, Western Australian Government and ECU under the landmark Perth City Deal.
Stantec served as lead engineer for the project, providing civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire protection, specialist lighting, and vertical transportation engineering services. Lyons Architects led the design, collaborating with Silver Thomas Hanley and Haworth Tompkins, with Multiplex as the main contractor.
Built above existing public transportation infrastructure, the ECU City campus required careful structural coordination to accommodate a mid-rise academic building while maintaining uninterrupted bus and rail operations beneath the site.
“ECU City was a unique project requiring close coordination and commitment to innovation across architecture, engineering, and the existing city infrastructure,” said Michael Lister, associate director and Western Australia Buildings Operations Leader at Stantec. “After years of careful planning, design, and construction, it is rewarding for our team to see the campus open its doors to students and the broader Perth community.”
The creative industries, business, and technology campus brings together ECU programs and courses from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, creative humanities from the School of Arts and Humanities, including the WA Screen and Media Academy, the School of Business and Law, Kurongkurl Katitjin, ECU’s Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research, and technology programs from the School of Science, as well as teaching spaces, performance venues, and student facilities.
