Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has appointed Gonzalo Covarrubias as managing director for Latin America—an important step that reflects the firm’s long-term commitment to the region and its continued focus on sustainable growth, technical excellence, and delivering enduring value for clients and communities.
For more than 55 years, Stantec has helped shape Latin America‘s future, delivering complex and impactful projects from offices across Chile, Argentina, and Peru. That legacy continues to grow with the firm welcoming more than 400 new multidisciplinary team members over the past year. Stantec has continually expanded its portfolio across mining, hydropower and dams, renewable energy, and industrial sectors, in response to the region’s evolving needs.
Following a year of strong performance, Covarrubias’s appointment marks a significant milestone in Stantec’s Latin America business. As managing director, he will lead operations across the region, strengthening client partnerships, advancing operational excellence, and building on the firm’s momentum as it continues to expand its integrated services.
“We’re pleased to welcome Gonzalo to Stantec and are confident his experience and strategic vision will be instrumental in the next chapter of our Latin America business,” said Cath Schefer, chief operating officer, Global at Stantec. “Latin America is a key growth region for the company, and Gonzalo’s leadership will help us deliver long-term value for clients.”
Covarrubias, who is based in Santiago, Chile, joins Stantec from Ausenco, where he served as senior vice president of Earth and Environment for South America. Previously, he was a country managing director at WSP, where he successfully led the integration of multiple acquired businesses into a unified organization—strengthening operational alignment and supporting sustained regional growth.
He succeeds Alberto Coya, who led Stantec’s Latin America business for more than a decade. Under Coya’s leadership, the firm significantly strengthened its presence in the region, growing from about 300 employees to a team of more than 900 professionals and laying a strong foundation for continued success.
