Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, supported its client Gold Fields La Cima (GFLC) in earning the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) certification at the Cerro Corona Mine in Cajamarca, Peru. The GISTM is the most comprehensive set of guidelines for the safe management of tailings deposits worldwide. This achievement marks the first Gold Fields site to reach this historic milestone.
Created in 2020, the GISTM covers the entire life cycle of a tailings storage facility, from the selection of the site through to site closure. The objective of the GISTM is to improve the safety of tailings facilities, prevent catastrophic failures, and protect the natural environment.
Stantec’s contributions to implementing the GISTM
Stantec continuously served as the Engineer of Record (EoR) at Cerro Corona, dating back to 2007. Between 2022 and 2025, Stantec worked closely with GFLC to implement and comply with the global GISTM standard, including identifying data gaps, developing technical documentation, performing internal audits with GFLC, participating in audits performed by other consultants, and presenting results to the Independent Technical Review Board of Cerro Corona.
“Stantec is honored to have played a role in the safe and successful tailings management program at Cerro Corona for nearly two decades,” said Danny Bay, sector leader of Mining, Minerals & Metals at Stantec in Latin America. “We recognize that achieving full GISTM compliance is a tremendous milestone for Cerro Corona, and we will continue to support Gold Fields in the application of best industry practice in tailings governance through the transition to closure and post closure.”
Stantec’s Mining, Minerals & Metals team has extensive experience in designing, maintaining, and remediating tailings storage facilities around the world. The firm designs mine tailings storage facilities that prioritize long-term safety and sustainability, and its teams can provide a full spectrum of tailings solutions, including EoR services. In 2025, Stantec also received recognition for supporting the implementation of the GISTM at Freeport-McMoRan’s Cerro Verde Mine in Arequipa, Peru.
