Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has selected Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, to provide detailed design services for the twinning of a section of Highway 17 in eastern Ontario. It will help advance a major transportation improvement project along the Trans-Canada Highway. The project will transform an approximately 22-kilometre section of the corridor from a two-lane highway into a four-lane divided highway, improving safety, traffic operations, and regional connectivity.
The project extends west of Canada’s capital via the Trans-Canada Highway and represents the next phase of a long-term effort to enhance one of Ontario’s most important transportation corridors. When complete, the corridor will include multiple interchanges and upgraded roadway infrastructure designed to address existing traffic congestion and safety challenges.
“Projects of this scale are about more than adding lanes—they require careful coordination across engineering, environmental, and community considerations to create infrastructure that performs well for decades,” said Brad Hewton, project manager at Stantec. “Our team is proud to continue to help improve a corridor that plays such an important role in connecting people, goods, and communities across eastern Ontario.”
Multidisciplinary design for a complex corridor
Stantec's multidisciplinary team will provide detailed design services spanning highway engineering, drainage and hydrology, traffic engineering, electrical engineering, structural engineering, environmental services, and related technical disciplines.
The project builds on Stantec’s longstanding involvement with the Highway 17 corridor and its ongoing work supporting transportation infrastructure improvements across Ontario. Team members have been involved in planning and development activities within this corridor for several years. They have contributed to previous phases of improvements and helped advance the vision for a safer, more efficient highway network, including the interim interchange and County Road 508 (Calabogie Road) as a precursor to this phase of design to advance operational and safety improvements within the corridor.
Supporting future construction and regional connectivity
As detailed design progresses, the project will help lay the foundation for future construction activities that support safer travel, improved operations, and enhanced connectivity for residents and businesses throughout the region and to Canada’s capital.
Stantec has a longstanding track record of supporting MTO in the delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects. Some key projects include the Bradford Bypass East Section, the Highway 3 Talbotville Bypass, and the Little Current Swing Bridge Replacement on Manitoulin Island.
