Autumn 2007

The installation consists of an architectural framework carefully aligned to the door and window mullions in the former lobby of McGregor Socks on Spadina Avenue. Documentation of the pre-existing terrazzo tartan in the floor and research into historical Scottish tartans determined the colours and the proportions of the sculptural weave.

McGregor is now merely a label, and its production has followed the lower costs that free trade and globalization have provided. Acknowledging the loss of well-paid unionized work to low paid third world labour, the title S-O-C-K-S is a homonym for the phrase "eso si que es," Spanish for "of course it is."
