When infrastructure is in an earthquake zone, terra firma may not always be firm. Ioannis’ work focuses on earthquake geotechnical engineering, numerical modelling, soil-foundation-structure interactions, and infrastructure. Why is this important? It helps quantify geotechnical risks, guide decisions, and find cost-effective solutions for his clients.

His projects are challenging and highly complex, such as his work with the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery after the Kaikōura Earthquake. This involved mechanically stabilising walls to host the realigned highway, designing a new reclamation and wharf for Port Lyttelton in soft soils and under high seismic demands, and the development of the seismic resilience assessment for Port Nelson.

Ioannis doesn’t shy away from a challenge and is rewarded by his work keeping communities safe, resilient and strong. He doesn’t leave the critical thinking at work, often spending time with friends debating how to solve the problems of the world.
