As a hydraulic modeller Abby’s primarily involved in building 1D and 2D stormwater and rainfall-runoff computer models that assist in assessments for flood mitigation, optioneering, culvert and bridge hydraulics, and dam breaches.
The models are used to see what happens with varying flows: where the problems are, what the consequences may be, and what we can do about it.
Her specialty is flooding, but Abby likes the variety in her work and advances in technology which keep her on her toes. For Abby no project is the same—she enjoys working with all of her clients who have different expectations in terms of detail, outputs, and timeframes.
Working in multiple offices, and at times in clients’ offices, means there’s never a dull moment. On one secondment to Auckland Council’s Modelling Planning Office and working in a team made up of various consultants, Abby was involved in stormwater modelling and planning across the Auckland region.
It’s a good thing Abby has job diversity—as a dancer and circus tumbler she’s not very good at sitting still.
