Gary Hengst

As a chief plant operator, Gary oversees wastewater treatment operations. This currently includes the management of the City of Lincoln Wastewater Treatment and Reclamation Facility along with a 13-mile forcemain and pump station.

Being successful in his field requires Gary to have a good understanding of equipment, processes, and people. He’s known for his focused initiative and creative problem-solving skills, paired with an optimistic and persistent attitude. In his position, he’s responsible for a myriad of things, including managing an over five-million-dollar yearly budget, monitoring and guiding the process control, and ensuring permit compliance. Gary has also been known for his love of weeding—staff put a mini spray rig on the back of an electric vehicle so he can kill weeds while monitoring the plant.

Outside of work, Gary dabbles with perfecting his barbequing and crafting the perfect cup of coffee. Other passions are his church, RVing, home improvement, shooting, golf, and movies. His go-to spot is just about any quiet place with a good book and relaxing beverage.
