Philip Johnson

Associate

Photo of Philip

Philip is responsible for the conceptual design and testing of water treatment systems for mining operations. His areas of expertise are designing systems for the removal of heavy metals and conducting bench-scale laboratory experiments and pilot-scale treatability studies on mine water.

One of Philip’s recent projects involved a laboratory bench-scale treatability study at the Holden Mine Water Treatment Plant near Lake Chelan, Washington. During the annual spring snowmelt, increased influent flows and mine water dilution inhibits heavy metal removal—which results in effluent discharge permit violations. Philip developed and directed a series of laboratory experiments to examine treatment options for achieving full compliance during the spring snowmelt period. The result? The study demonstrated the effectiveness of sodium hydrosulfide for removing cadmium and zinc during the spring snowmelt.

When he isn’t at work, Philip might be outdoors snowshoeing, hiking, boating, or cycling. For a relaxing time, he’s probably baking pastries and breads, or tending to his indoor cactuses.
