Phil specializes in the unique area of solid waste management where he helps clients find appropriate treatment and disposal solutions. He’s committed to finding opportunities for turning waste into resource material through alternative treatment technologies.

Known for designing landfills and reconfiguring transfer stations for resource recovery, Phil also brings specialist experience in financial modeling. He appreciates the varied skillset his work requires—solid waste management involves geotechnical, civil, stormwater, traffic, structural, and environmental engineering through to resource consent planning.

Working with the Nelson Tasman Regional Landfill Business Unit, Phil was recently involved with the University of Auckland, performing bench-top testing of copper-chromium-arsenic (CCA) treated wood by hydrothermal liquefaction. The outcome showed that more work is needed to clean the biofuel of heavy metals, but it demonstrated the potential for converting various wastes into useful materials.

Along with his passion for turning waste into resources, Phil has developed a passion for the art of wood turning—he’s been learning the craft and building his collection of tools over the past few years.
