During the planning of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades from Burke to Tram roads, arboricultural and ecological assessments for Valda Wetlands needed to be done to identify ecological values and make sure impacts are avoided or minimized from the construction. Our team was there to help.
Our ecologists and consulting arborist spent several weeks performing day and night surveys, mapping and quantifying the ecological values within the survey area. This involved the identification, measurement, evaluation, photography, and tagging of trees and undertaking vegetation quality assessments for several ecological vegetation classes. The inventory included protected flora species, noxious weeds and pests, native vegetation, habitat trees and threatened flora, fauna, and ecological communities.
The survey was a success, despite encountering several constraints, including the site being nestled in a residential area, an active park, and a busy freeway. Our work also involved the locating and re-assessment of specific trees from a five-year-old survey, night-time surveys with traffic management along a busy freeway, and performing safe and efficient assessments of sloping terrain leading to a waterway and managing extreme weather conditions.
The work led to additional engagements for native vegetation mapping, quantification, and support services for planning permit application.
