Athllon Drive Infrastructure Design

Athllon Drive is a main arterial road in Canberra’s south that’s currently subject to increasing traffic. With anticipated development along the road corridor, the snarl’s expected to get even worse. The proposed response? Creating a duplication route to ease congestion and improve traffic flow and safety.

We were commissioned to create concept designs for the duplication of Athllon Drive between Hindmarsh Drive and Melrose Drive, and between Sulwood Drive and Drakeford Drive. The designs needed to reduce congestion and improve travel times for 14,000 vehicles including rapid bus services, that use this road each day. Designs also needed to improve safety by addressing the crash history on this road—rear-end collisions caused by congestion. Our concept designs set out the proposed duplication that included new traffic lights, traffic management infrastructure, improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians with path connections and on-road cycle lanes, and a new underpass.

The proposed extension of light rail to Mawson, which primarily impacts the northern section of Athllon Drive, has meant that we’re currently coordinating with Major Projects Canberra’s Light Rail team, ahead of the progression of the detailed design for Athllon Drive.
