Bilya Koort Boodja, Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge

Bilya Koort Boodja, a new centre for Nyoongar culture and environmental knowledge is situated in the heart of Northam. Its goal? To share and conserve Aboriginal heritage for the surrounding communities and visitors to the area. Overlooking the surging Avon River on a known floodplain, the centre needed careful consideration around stormwater design.

Our hydraulic and fire services design for the development helped produce a sleek and seamless integration into the landscape. Solutions focused around discharge locations and heights above flood levels, and we selected gutter spouts over traditional downpipes for the effective removal of rainwater from the built form.. To sympathetically reflect the natural simplicity of the architectural design and materials selection, service connections with the environment were concealed wherever possible.

The dynamic Bilya Koort Boodja includes exhibition and meeting space, welcome landings, immersive learning areas, offices, and amenities.
