Derwent Ferry Expansion

Greater Hobart has experienced unprecedented growth over the past decade that is set to continue. Maintaining inclusive and sustainable growth requires coordinated investment in a reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective transportation system.

To respond to this need, a steering committee of Greater Hobart councils commissioned our team to develop a proof-of-concept study, investigating the expansion of passenger ferry services on the River Derwent as an affordable, practical, and sustainable public transportation option.

Our team conducted a comprehensive overview of the Derwent including its geography and socioeconomic profile. We reviewed proposed terminal locations, engaged with river stakeholders, assessed marine civil opportunities and constraints, and evaluated navigation considerations. We also conducted a patronage assessment, vessel analysis, and examined public transportation integration and potential land use changes. Additionally, we developed a compelling and evidence-based business case, encapsulating the strategic need, expected economic benefits, financing, and deliverability of the project.

The steering committee then used the gathered information and business case to secure AUD$20 million of federal grant funding to deliver the expansion.
