ECU City is envisioned as an animated downtown streetscape with activity occurring in performance spaces, studios, and digital labs
Edith Cowan University (ECU) City represents one of the largest contracts to come from the Perth City Deal,a collaboration between the Australian Government, Western Australian Government, and City of Perth.
ECU City is the centrepiece of the Perth City Deal and will become Western Australia’s first comprehensive city university campus.
As lead engineer, we’ll provide civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire protection, specialist lighting, and vertical transportation engineering as well as building and traffic planning services. The new building campus will sit directly above Perth Transport Authority’s busport and the Fremantle and Joondalup train tunnels, which will require our team to find a fine balance between limiting the load and preventing movement from the below assets.
To overcome this, we’ll incorporate a mixture of concrete and steel materials to withstand motion from the trains and buses. Targeting a five star green rating, the building will also feature adaptive and energy efficient climate control with natural ventilation. Furthermore, our designs will require alignment with the extremely sensitive acoustic needs of the performance rooms and studios to reduce noise interference.
The new campus aims to attract more than 9,000 students and staff when it opens in 2025 and grow to more than 11,000 students and staff by 2034. It represents an opportunity to integrate creative industries, business, and technology courses with ECU’s internationally recognized Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
