Enhancing a wharf to better support ever larger vessels

Located just minutes from Darwin’s central business district, Fort Hill Wharf is a 300-metre-long (427-foot-long) wharf that provides a natural deep-water berth for Australian Navy and cruise vessels. To meet increasing demand, the Port of Darwin engaged us to extend and strengthen the wharf to better accommodate the largest cruise vessels in the world.

We have worked across the whole project life cycle from design development through concept and detailed design and into the construction phase. Our multidisciplinary team provided geotechnical design and investigation, structural design, navigation simulation advice, mooring analysis, coastal studies, and services design.

The coastal study, a crucial aspect of the project, merged wave model for Darwin Harbour with wind data and mooring analysis to estimate berth operability as well as feed into vessel navigation simulations. These studies proved that the wharf could withstand the new loads arising from the larger vessels, which saved substantial capital costs and disruptions This in turn has enabled us to develop a construction methodology that will allow the Port of Darwin to keep the wharf in full operation during the upgrade.

The wharf extension and upgrades will provide a facility that can meet the needs of the largest cruise vessels in the market for years to come.
