Keeping open spaces green and safe through droughts

Water scarcity is an on-going reality for many Australian towns. They must be continually on the lookout for ways to improve water resilience for their communities, and Goulburn is no different. When Goulburn Mulwaree Council was looking for an environmentally sustainable solution for watering parched parks and recreation spaces, keeping them green and safe to play on, we provided a solution for drought resilience. How? By reusing high-quality treated effluent to irrigate the sites.

Our detailed design for the scheme consisted of a feasibility assessment and cost-benefit analysis, an assessment of existing infrastructure to repurpose, the design of pump, reticulation, and irrigation systems, and electrical and controls design. We also provided for delivering water balance and assessment of irrigation demands, geotechnical investigations, testing, commissioning, and training. Our recycled water management plan gained approval for all the proposed uses of recycled water. The system can be expanded and can provide treated effluent for other uses.

The scheme is currently rolling out across Goulburn—reusing treated effluent has reduced demand on the potable water network and has increased water security to help the community enjoy thriving green spaces year-round.
