Greater Brockman Syncline Project

Australia’s incredible landscape holds wealth of many kinds, from the living traditions embodied in indigenous cultures, to agricultural practices on the land, to the extraction of minerals from beneath the surface. Over time, awareness of how activities, like mining, impact the environment have assumed critical importance. When our client, Rio Tinto, wanted to construct an iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara bioregion, we provided the environmental assessment expertise.

We deployed our environmental experts to survey the site and surroundings, conducting field assessments, including detailed flora and vegetation surveys, vertebrate and invertebrate fauna surveys, and targeted searches for significant species over a 12,500-hectare area. In the end, our comprehensive environmental assessment was approved by the Government of Western Australia, allowing the mine to proceed to the next planning stages.

With a lifespan of approximately 20 years and output of about 22 metric tonnes per year, Rio Tinto’s mine represents significant economic and job creation opportunities for the region. We’re proud to help our client advance this project, while acknowledging and respecting the environment with greater sustainability in their mining operations.
