HyKembla Hydrogen Pilot Plant

Steel is one of the most renewable construction materials in the world, but current manufacturing processes make its production, recycling, and distribution one of the largest sources of global carbon emissions. We’re working to change that. As part of an industry-leading plan to transition to green steel production over the next 30 years, we’re working with Australia’s largest steel producer, BlueScope, to develop a Hydrogen Hub pilot plant at their primary steelmaking plant in Port Kembla, New South Wales.

We’ve taken a lead role in delivering the multidisciplinary design and planning approvals for the project, working in a collaborative partnership with Aurecon and BlueScope’s internal project team. The project consists of an initial 10 megawatt (MW) electrolyzer plant to trial hydrogen in existing steelmaking processes and enable the transition to hydrogen powered heavy vehicles. It also allows for a future expansion to a 40 MW electrolyzer plant to support commercial trials of new ironmaking technologies, and the bulk supply of hydrogen to other external users that are joining the transition to hydrogen fuel usage.

The project has completed the feasibility phase and is currently undergoing internal review by BlueScope to determine how to proceed to the next phase of implementation.
