Helping the Isaac Regional Council build resilience in their coastal communities

Cyclones can have devastating impacts on man-made and natural structures. It’s critical for coastal communities to identify areas vulnerable to those impacts and develop plans to meet those challenges. Located on the central Queensland coast, the Isaac Regional Council engaged our team to undertake a coastal hazard and storm tide study to identify areas susceptible to storm tide inundation, the scale of their exposure, and the risk to vulnerable infrastructure.

Our team evaluated short- and long-term erosion for the five townships on the coast of the local government area, mapped coastal hazards, and facilitated community consultation and engagement sessions. We also assessed local properties and infrastructure exposed to storm tide hazards. Additionally, we conducted an inundation modeling and risk assessment to provide a fully calibrated and verified model capable of stimulating cyclonic conditions and likely impacts from tides, waves, and storm surges.

The Council has used the outputs of both assessments to increase storm tide hazard awareness among the local community and inform the development of the Isaac Regional Planning Scheme.
