Transforming Karratha from a mining town into a regional city with economic development, land unlocking, and improved amenities

The West Australia State Government has a vision: to build vibrant cities that offer economic and social sustainability from one generation to the next. They want to build places that people will choose to live on a permanent and intergenerational basis, with quality accommodation and services in line with other major Australian cities.

We provided civil and underground power consulting services, developing the city centre while minimizing the impact on existing businesses and users. In partnership with Emerge Associates materials palettes with the natural amenity and Pilbara climate in mind while also providing a high-quality public realm. The project involved significant modifications and upgrades to the road and infrastructure networks, including road realignments through existing buildings, undergrounding of existing overhead distribution services, and the accommodation of a planned voltage upgrade from 11 to 22 kilovolts.

With these servicing strategies, we were able to support the creation of several new development sites for Karratha that will become a health campus, a performing arts space, apartment buildings, a retirement village, and a health clinic. These sites will provide opportunities for growth and increased density through mixed-use design. Our high level of finish on the streetscapes incorporated narrow road reserves to create a city centre feel—a pedestrian friendly environment with shade structures, LED night lighting, and other community amenities.
