Mount Darragh and Tantawangalo Detailed Slope Remediation Design

A combination of bushfires and subsequent higher than average rainfall resulted in landslide and scour features on the Mount Darragh and Tantawangalo Roads in New South Wales—and the roadways needed to be restored. Our team was tasked with slope risk assessment, geotechnical investigation, and remediation design, providing practical remediation approaches in line with state natural disaster recovery funding requirements.

Of 30 nominated sites we assessed, nine were formally investigated and required design assistance and 21 were identified as requiring drainage upgrades and scour protection. An additional six sites were nominated for investigation and design assessment during the original works. Our team provided investigation of the subsurface profile at the remediation sites, and formal mapping of the upslope and downslope areas to contribute towards the development of a geotechnical model. We undertook limit-equilibrium modeling, a method used to analyze the stability of slopes and retaining structures, to assess likely failure mechanisms and current factors of safety.

Alongside developing remedial designs to reinstate road shoulders, these measures help prevent future potential slips along the length of both roads—providing more security for natural disasters that may come.
