New Perth Busport

The Wellington Street Bus Station was aging and needed to be replaced—which is where the new underground Perth Busport came in. This project would be the first bus station in Australia to include the latest technology in airport-style dynamic stand allocation to enable up to 200 buses per hour by 2031.

Stantec was engaged by the City Busport Alliance to deliver the complex building services for this major infrastructure project. Given the highly complex nature of the Perth Busport, services integration was defined as a separate discipline, which resulted in reduced capital costs due to the ‘sharing’ of infrastructure. Our design enables a facility control officer to monitor all essential systems: gas, smoke, fire and heat detection, ventilation, CCTV, communications, and security. We also introduced a deluge-type fire suppression system along with a mobile incident response briefcase that provides critical real-time data using touch-screen technology for fire and emergency response teams.

Many aspects of the design meet international standards, as the complexities of the project go beyond the applications of Australian Standards. The Perth City Busport now gives commuters an innovative and streamlined transit journey and reconnects Perth to the Northbridge entertainment precinct.
