Safeguarding vital marine services in a hostile environment

Located in one of Australia’s most hostile environments, Port Hedland’s control tower serving Western Australia's coast needed replacing to safeguard future services. Building directly in front of the existing centre, we were asked to provide civil and structural consultancy for the new facility without impacting on Pilbara Ports Authority’s (PPA) ability to maintain vital operations.

Careful retention works and drainage replacement helped accommodate footings and avoid damage to a memorial alongside the constrained site. To ensure provision of post-disaster services, materials for the Integrated Marine Operations Centre were chosen for robustness and ability to withstand the hot coastal climate, close to an iron ore plant. Buildability in a regional area was overcome via prefabricated and modularised elements to maintain quality.

Mounting a camera atop the 45m tower during construction secured the PPA’s operations prior to handover of the award-winning facility. The new tower achieves 270° of uninterrupted sightlines through 60mm load-bearing glazing, and houses the critical Vessel Traffic Services equipment that ensures 6,000+ vessel movements a year are safely managed, no matter what.
