Somerset Dam Improvement Project – Reference Design

Exploring options to safeguard the community against flooding

Upgrading the Somerset dam to surpass the latest probable maximum flood requirements

Not only do dams play a vital role in storing water for our communities, but equally importantly, they work towards keeping us safe during floods. The Somerset Dam is a dual-purpose water supply and flood mitigation dam, owned and operated by Seqwater. Water from Somerset dam (located on the Stanley River) feeds directly into Wivenhoe Dam. Both dams are operated as one system to maximise flood mitigation benefits for the Brisbane River and the communities downstream.

In 2016, the flood operation procedures for Somerset Dam were modified as a precautionary safety measure, and the operating levels of both Somerset and Wivenhoe dams were temporarily lowered to maintain flood mitigation benefits. As part of Seqwater’s Dam Improvement Program, a detailed business case is being prepared for the upgrade of Somerset dam, which will improve the dam’s ability to withstand extreme floods and earthquakes, enable the reservoir level to be restored to its original full supply level, and meet today’s engineering and dam safety standards.

Our job? Providing design services to assess the proposed upgrade options, including raising the dam crest and constructing a downstream buttress. We’re also modifying the existing spillway and outlet works arrangements to ensure that the latest probable maximum flood estimates can be safely passed.

Our team’s services include a detailed dam safety risk assessment, developing construction work sequences, cost estimation, and environmental approvals. When complete, this will help Seqwater better support their dam improvement program and Somerset dam upgrade plans.
