South Road Upgrade
The South Road Upgrade Project was put in place by Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) to upgrade five intersections along a four-kilometre section of South Road between Warrigal Road and the Nepean Highway. The upgrades will improve congestion by removing traffic bottlenecks and provide increased capacity at the five intersections—delivering improved journey times and safety for drivers and pedestrians.
Our role has focused on the redesign of the five intersections informed by detailed traffic modelling, civil, and drainage design within a constrained site. Design outcomes included the addition of new turning lanes, improved intersection design, and the introduction of new traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. The Nepean bike path, which runs alongside the corridor, was widened, and received upgraded fencing and signage. We also delivered design solutions for related infrastructure including repositioning utilities, and rehabilitating/reconstructing all road and pavement surfaces.
The major challenges of the project have been in minimizing disruptions to the community and managing the constant design changes arising during the construction phase.
