South Wharf Condition Assessments

Melbourne’s South Wharf—a major bulk goods terminal—arcs its way from the central business district (CBD) alongside the Yarra River until it reaches Hobson’s Bay. The Port of Melbourne engaged our team to undertake a condition assessment of the piled concrete structure and perform the subsequent detailed design of the remedial and upgrade works required to continue operations at the facility for a further 25 years.

Following the condition assessment of wharf infrastructure above and below the waterline, we began the detailed design phase which set out to upgrade major concrete wharf infrastructure including the replacement of suspended concrete deck, bent beams, and services. We also provided detailed designs for remediation works to repair concrete piles, and the reinstatement of sheet piles walls to ensure stability of landside structures. Following this, we were engaged to undertake detailed designs to allow for berthing of larger vessels while having a minimal impact wharf operations during construction. This process required significant geotechnical and structural modelling to make sure the updated berthing and dredging requirements didn't affect the overall stability of the wharf.

Ultimately, this project serves as a valuable asset management tool for consistent inspections. It will enhance data collection efficiency, promote best practices, and maintain high safety standards—keeping the wharf running smoothly for years to come.
