Operational building energy efficiency considerations were key to this delivery
St Peter's College was built in 1847 just 11 years after South Australia was established. These days? A growing intake of students in the region meant the campus needed to expand. When the college set out to refurbish and upgrade three of their existing heritage buildings, they brought us in to help them include an additional level on one—the Big Quad South building.
The challenge? Upgrading a heritage site involves many complexities, particularly when it comes to addressing operational building energy efficiency. As part of our design services, we had to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and include high-performing materials in the construction. Carrying out energy efficiency assessments, our team identified a Section J energy efficiency performance solution was the best response due to its flexibility under the National Construction Code regulatory.
Utilising high-performing fabrics and glazing where possible, we were able to compensate for poorer performing aspects of the heritage building. Plus, our experience with the National Construction Code 2019 performance solutions and executing thermal bridging calculation requirements helped our team reduce heat loss, saving energy bills and reducing construction costs.
When complete, the upgraded Big Quad South building will support a larger population of students with preserved heritage features as well as an energy efficient envelope.
