Sydney Metro Northwest Temporary Transportation Project

As Australia’s largest city, Sydney is home to approximately five million residents—many of whom work and travel to and through the central business district (CBD). To accommodate the growing population and to provide efficient public transport options, Transport for NSW is increasing the capacity of train services to the CBD through the provision of new metro services from the northwest suburbs (and elsewhere across the city).

Our team was engaged to provide pedestrian modeling for various stations as part of the conversion of the existing Epping to Chatswood line to the new metro service. This involved an assessment of station precincts, including bus stops, across a wide area and the construction of several pedestrian microsimulation models. By developing bespoke models and adopting industry leading calibration and validation metrics we were able to provide confidence in the project’s outcome—minimizing disruption to the traveling public during construction of the new metro service by maintaining access to the existing network during infrastructure upgrades.

The outcome? A seamless transition to the new metro system for Sydneysiders in the northwest without major interruption.
