Reducing BHP’s Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions at its Leinster and Mount Keith nickel operations

Initiated under a power purchase agreement between TransAlta and BHP Nickel West, the Northern Goldfields Solar Project will provide significant fuel savings and reduce scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. To bring this project to life, TransAlta engaged our team to serve as the project management consultant on this transformational effort.

Our services included the management, development, execution, integration, and commissioning of two photovoltaic (PV) solar farms and a battery energy storage system. At BHP’s Mount Keith location, we helped establish a 27.4-megawatt (MW) PV solar farm. At their Leinster site, a 10.1 MW with 5.4 MW-hour battery storage system supplements the 10.7 MW PV solar farm. Along with interconnecting transmission infrastructure, both Mount Keith and Leinster integrate into TransAlta’s 169 MW Southern Cross Energy North remote islanded network.

This renewable energy project is TransAlta’s first solar PV build in Australia. It’s also the first large-scale onsite PV solar farm and battery that BHP has commissioned and supports emission reduction targets—delivering lower carbon and decreased fuel cost to produce nickel. Ultimately, this project will help realize a reduction of 540,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) over the initial decade of operation.
