Building a world-class fitness facility in a residential setting means a carefully considered design
The relocation and establishment of West Coast Eagles' (WCE) training facility at Lathlain Park represents a significant milestone in the club's 80-year history in Subiaco. Duplicating first-rate pitches at Optus Stadium and the MCG, the new facility’s two ovals required early attention within a tight program to ensure sufficient time for turf growth and establishment. Our structural and civil teams liaised with the architect, landscape architect, pitch specialist, and the Perth Football Club to determine the correct levels.
The deceptive simplicity of the “eagle-wing” feature roof atop the multi-functional internal areas dictated the complex geometry of our structural framing process. We worked closely with the architect, sharing 3D modelling to facilitate a rational structural grid which enables future expansion of the 200-metre (656-foot) structure.
Constrained by existing buildings, the structure was carefully positioned to minimise impact on the environs, and 200 new trees were planted to replace the 94 mainly young or dying trees removed prior to construction. We also assisted the client throughout the local consultation process.
Now complete, the bespoke, world-class, four-storey structure includes training and rehabilitation spaces, a lap pool and a hydrotherapy pool, and gyms as well as offices (including for the Wirrpanda Foundation), community function space, and a club museum. The internal training space allows practice kicks within the 13-metre high (43-foot) and 65-metre (213-foot) corner-to-corner field.
