Advancing Africa's sustainable energy with a unified transition scheme

African Energy Transition Strategy and Action Plan (ETSAP) Support

While extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, Africa’s energy supply system holds significant potential for decarbonization. Current gaps in energy access, energy security, resilience, and sustainability present crucial challenges to fully enabling energy as a driver of the continent’s socio-economic and environmental future. The African Union conceived the Energy Transition Strategy and Action Plan (ETSAP) with the aim of providing a strategic roadmap for providing universal energy access, fostering socio-economic growth, and positioning Africa as a leader in clean energy innovation.

We supported the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Energy Commission (AFREC) within the African Union, and other key parties across all regions in the creation of this comprehensive, evidence-based plan. We combined rigorous data analysis, consultations, and scenario modeling to define actionable pathways for decarbonization in Africa. Our team undertook research to map renewable resources and assess infrastructure readiness. We also designed policy frameworks and financial mechanisms to support efficient energy planning and impactful climate action.

AFREC presented ETSAP during the African Energy Efficiency Conference as a guiding document for sustainable investments, strengthening institutional capacity, and promoting regional cooperation for a just and equitable transition. With such a plan, the African Union can build a future where abundant renewable resources power inclusive prosperity and a sustainable future that drives climate resilience.
