Providing desired water quality through rural infrastructure management, maintenance, and financing strategies

In line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6), Benin aims to achieve universal access to safe drinking water by 2030 at the latest. This goal involves the development and implementation of a strong strategy and action plan for rural water supply development, building on the work undertaken in the previous 10 years.

Stantec was mobilized to assist the ministry in charge of water with taking stock of the existing situation and needs—notably through a survey involving 930 households and other stakeholders across 40 villages and urban districts. Our team formulated strategic options for achieving 100% coverage, and we also worked to improve the sector’s technical and financial monitoring system. Following a stakeholder workshop, we prepared a national strategy for rural water supply development for the 2017–2030 period, an action plan for 2017–2021, a financing plan up to 2030, and a performance assessment framework for the sub-sector.

With these measures in place, Benin will be on track to providing safe drinking water to their communities by 2030.
