Burkina Faso Secondary Cities for Sustainable Growth Support
Burkina Faso’s secondary cities are at the heart of the country’s vision for balanced territorial development. The Programme de Développement des Villes Secondaires responds to urgent needs for infrastructure, governance, and social cohesion in a context marked by demographic growth and security challenges.
On behalf of EU Delegation to Burkina Faso, we provided support for the program with a view to empowering secondary cities for sustainable growth in Burkina Faso. Combining our international expertise in urban planning with local socio-economic insights into designing practical solutions for cities, we involved municipalities, technical services, and community participants in the process to give them ownership of the results. We integrated environmental considerations and promoted green growth strategies in everything from feasibility studies to capacity building workshops.
Through this effort, we contributed to 18 priority economic infrastructures across six cities, fostering local employment and agro-food supply chains. Moreover, we enabled municipalities to manage projects effectively and embrace smart, sustainable practices.
This project helps set the stage for resilient urban systems that enhance quality of life, stimulate economic activity, and pave the way for future investments aligned with Burkina Faso’s national development strategies.
