As Croatia advances toward achieving their ambitious climate and energy goals, the greening of motorway networks has become a critical priority. Hrvatske Autoceste (HAC) is setting out to transform the country’s infrastructure by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enabling sustainable mobility. By combining solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with electric vehicle (EV) charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure, HAC intends to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy costs, and align its network with EU and national climate policies.
The European Investment Bank selected our consortium to help HAC with the implementation of sustainable solutions for Croatian motorways. We carried out detailed technical, economic, and regulatory analyses, develop future investment plans, and defined delivery models aligned with EU funding opportunities and Croatian policy frameworks. Through this technical assistance, we provided HAC with holistic investment plans, delivery models, and financing options, with an eye to market readiness and long-term transport decarbonization needs.
HAC now has the analytical basis to make informed decisions regarding the deployment of solar PV, EV charging, and hydrogen infrastructure on the motorway network. The result will be a future-ready motorway network that produces clean energy, supports alternative fuels, and strengthens Croatia’s position within the sustainable transportation system in the EU.
