Kazakhstan is accelerating its transition toward a low-carbon and sustainable economy in response to climate pressures, evolving global markets, and closer alignment with European environmental standards. The country’s long-standing cooperation with the European Union (EU) directly supports implementation of green reforms such as the environmental code and new water code, while addressing ongoing challenges such as the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
Together with our partners, we were selected by the European Commission to help Kazakhstan build stronger systems, skills, and tools for its green transition. Through our collaboration with national ministries, key industry and international partners, we mainly work to improve tools for decarbonization, industrial modernization, and water efficiency. We support the enhancement and alignment of the country’s Emissions Trading System with EU standards, including policy development, market design improvements, and capacity building for both institutions and industry. In parallel, we conduct technological audits to drive measurable improvements in industrial environmental performance, contributing to the development of a repository of best practices. We also contribute to strengthening water resource management by advancing uptake of innovative digital tools, groundwater monitoring systems, and regulatory standards aligned with EU guidelines.
These actions will support Kazakhstan in building a more resilient, competitive, and sustainable economy, positioning the country to meet its long-term climate goals and strengthening its integration into global low-carbon markets.
